VERSION 4.03

Congratulations on you purchase of PJ Harness Analyser from PJ Data. Please make sure you read and understand the license agreement for conditions of use.

PJ Data is a small company that provides individual sectional data to the Australian Harness Racing Industry. We recognised a gap in harness racing having no individual sectional data publicly available. We were completing this work for our own use so it just made sense to offer this to the industry/public. We would like to acknowledge the Australian Harness Industry that has provided us with the opportunity to grow and promote our business. Sectional reports are freely available at http://www.harness.org.au for all states and most races.

This software has been developed over years of study into horse and harness racing sectional time analysis. The creator is a civil engineer who has 25 years of analysis experience in Gallops, Greyhounds and Harness racing. The consistency found in harness racing has proven to be a winner. We want to make the product available to a broad audience. It’s not just about picking winners. We want fair racing and we hope this product can assist owners / trainers / punters better understand the how to be successful in harness racing, and understand factors like sectional speed, track difference, suitable race distances and position in running.

The program uses sectional data combined with advances track models for every track in Australia as well as individual race variance factors that are determined for every race in every meeting to normalise every race. The software will inform you very quickly which horse is the fastest in the race but harness racing is not all about who is the fastest. Position and pace can dictate a race in a lot of circumstances.

The program is a Windows based application. Your subscription allows download of your subscribed states meetings for analysis and results to check your analysis versus actual. While you can just print the ratings once a meeting is loaded, the product has many features to enhance your ratings. Depending on how use the program, different users will come up with different ratings.

Some of the key features you have been provided as part of you package are:

  • Track Models and statistics – Track models have been developed for each distance at each track, including different gaits and standing start adjustments. These are key to comparing runs at different locations/distances. These models have been professionally developed over a long time using the track’s geometry and surface type, historical sectional times and trial and error. Comparisons adjust for sectional difference but the difference changes depending on the pace of a race.
  • Historic Race / Horse Data – The program downloads all previous runs within the last 500 days for the analysis.
  • Race Variance Factors – For every race in every race meeting your results include the critical Race Variance Factors that takes into consideration race speed, track condition, class and many other factors combined into a single factor for each race.
  • Position in running – Position in running is provided for all previous runs. This helps identify racing patterns and is used to determine the actual distance each horse has run for the race. This is a game changer when used in the analysis.
  • Use / Discard Flag – The calculations will discard some runs automatically depending on the filter settings, but you are provided facility to exclude individual runs that you think shouldn’t be including in analysis for each horse. This will make a difference to the calculations/ratings. Runs can be excluded for the current race analysis only or saved so that are exclusioned for future meetings as well.
  • Predicted positions – The acceptances include computer generated and verified predicted positions for every runner. You can modify these as you like within the program but you are provided a starting point. The program can also account for the extra predicted distance within the analysis depending on how wide the horse is predicted to sit if you choose to include this.
  • Meeting results data – Don’t remove your meeting after analysis. The next day results will be available for the meeting and the program will import these so you can see how it compared to used analysis prior to the race. It is important to look back on results to better understand the workings within the software.
  • Save your analysis – Any meeting can be saved and reloaded at a later date to review.
  • Factors to adjust – Factors are user adjustable. They include extra distance run, daily variance factors, maximum finish margin to use in calculations and how many days back to review data. In the user settings you can set your default adjustments. You can also change these in every race.
  • Driver / Trainers Stats and % Breaks – The acceptance files include the place percent for the last 100 rides for every driver and the % of times each horse breaks in its career. A driver / trainer combination percent place is also provided and a number of other statistics. These statistics can be used to make adjustments to the ratings.
  • Ratings System – The ratings are calculated from sectional times for distance, track, barrier/row, day/night runs, last 4 runs, driver, trainer, predicted position and last start to determine a rating for each horse in each race. The user can change the predicted racing positions and exclude previous runs and adjust the factors described above which will affect the ratings.
  • Ratings adjustments – Adjustments are made for current driver versus previous drivers, today’s position versus previous positions (Both Row/Barrier and position in runner adjustments) and trainer strike rate. Each of these 4 adjustments can be applied as either full, medium or off. Again in the user setting you can set your default application for these adjustments and you can alter them in each race.

The Analyser is a relatively simple but powerful tool when used in the right way. It will take a bit of practice to use the full power but even novice users will benefit from the information, even with limited knowledge of the racing. It is strongly advised to read these help files before you get started and refer back to relevant sections as you need to so you get familiar with the program.

If you have any troubles installing, setting up, running or understanding the program refer to the troubleshooting section of this help file.
